This course is part of our GCS Prep-Program. Learn more about the full prep-program here: MedBridge GCS Prep-Program.
Each day of our lives, 250,000 people die in the world. Although the circumstances are unique for each individual, certain commonalities exist with respect to the ways in which our lives come to an end. Despite the inevitability of our eventual death, prevailing attitudes and societal customs shelter us from the realities of this natural process, possibly preventing us from engaging authentically with our patients as they face the end of life. This course will explore the attitudes, causes, and trajectories of the dying process, emphasizing the clinical manifestations associated with the shutting down of body systems and physiologic processes. Finally, this course will explore objective measures which can be used for prognosis of mortality, measurement of symptoms, and assessment of function. It is hoped that this course will promote awareness, understanding and empowerment as we support our patients and their families through this ultimate journey.

This course is part of our GCS Prep-Program. Learn more about the full prep-program here: MedBridge GCS Prep-Program.
As increasing numbers of our population face the challenges of living with severe, chronic and life threatening disease, the effective utilization of healthcare resources is a growing concern. Palliative care and Hospice are well recognized settings in which such care is provided, yet misconceptions abound regarding their appropriate use. These misconceptions prevent timely referrals, compelling patients to seek unnecessary, often painful treatments which limit their quality of life. This course will provide a comprehensive overview of palliative care and hospice, including the indications for admission, the services provided and the outcomes affected. In addition, end of life planning through advanced directives will be discussed. A primary goal of this course is empowering clinicians with the skills to provide appropriate end of life education to families and other healthcare providers, and most of all, to promote patient access to palliative care and hospice programs when indicated. Finally, this course will provide a brief overview of the physical therapist's role in end of life care.
Mindfulness to Cultivate Empathy, Resilience, & Therapeutic Presence
Presented by Karen Mueller, PhD, DPT, PT, NBC-HWC
Mindfulness to Cultivate Empathy, Resilience, & Therapeutic Presence
The current system of healthcare delivery requires the ability to effectively manage multiple, continuous, and often conflicting demands, resulting in emotional and physiologic reactivity, disengagement and burnout. Accordingly, increasing attention is now being directed towards the identification of interventions to support resilience and engagement among healthcare providers. Significant evidence suggests that mindfulness based strategies are effective tools for empowering healthcare providers in the compassionate care of the patients they are called to serve. This course will explore the use of mindfulness based tools for promoting empathy, supporting resilience, and enhancing therapeutic presence among health care providers. Suggestions for the development of both formal and informal mindfulness based practices will be provided.
